Roses are always popular with gardeners and sometimes become treasured family heirlooms passed down from generation to generation. Angel Face Rose is one such rose that is bound to become a family treasure. It has been a reliable grower since its introduction in 1968. The dusty-purple color of its blooms mixed with its intoxicating scent makes Angel Face irresistible. This is a rose shrub grown on its own rootstock, making it very hardy and durable and less likely to have viruses.
Rosa ‘Angel Face’ is a nonstop bloomer that keeps going all summer with very little deadheading needed. Angel face has also received numerous awards since its introduction in 1968 and is the first modern mauve rose being produced. Each 3½ inch flower is packed with 30-35 petals. Angel Face Rose performs well in hotter climates and makes perfect cut flowers with long stems.
Angel Face Rose Care
Plant this rose in a well-draining spot that is also moisture retentive. Add organic compost to loosen up clay soils or to firm up sandy soils. Roses appreciate a thick application of mulch at the beginning of the spring. Use loose arborist chips, finely shredded leaves, or even a layer of straw to help keep the weeds down and the soil moist. Water well and deeply each week to encourage the roots to grow deep into the ground. Fertilize in the spring with a granular feed for roses and other flowering shrubs. Scratch the recommended amount into the soil above the root zone and thoroughly water it.
Prune in the late winter or early spring, well before the first leaves appear. Cut out the oldest and thickest canes to the ground. Also, remove any dead, diseased, dying, or diagonal branches. Roses grown on their own rootstock are more likely to recover from a brutal winter than grafted roses. Any damaged branches can be cut entirely to the ground and will regrow during the same season. Angel Face only blooms on older wood from the previous year, so try not to remove many stem tips.
Angel Face Rose Spacing
Roses need lots of room on all sides for proper air circulation. Many of the most common diseases of roses are due to overcrowding or overwatering. Angel face Rose has a mature height of 4-5 feet and a width of 3 feet. Space multiple roses 3 feet apart on center. Plant any bulbs or perennials at least 12 inches from the base of the shrub. Shrub roses grow wonderfully in a container and need a pot diameter of at least 12 inches.
