Growing Zones
Most Lilacs require a certain number of days below freezing to bloom and perform well. Thus, gardeners in warm areas usually are unable to grow the beloved cottage garden plant. Luckily, Angel White Lilac is available. This amazingly fragrant shrub does not require chill hours to bloom and is perfect for almost every growing zone. The naturally open growth habit needs little maintenance to look good.
Lilacs make outstanding informal hedges but also look great as a specimen in a sunny corner of the garden. Angel white Lilac is a great attractor of beneficial pollinators late in the spring and is good coverage for wildlife later in the season before it loses its foliage in the fall. Deer do not often browse Lilacs, and there are few diseases that affect Angel White. Some great companion plants for Lilac are Ornamental grasses, Weigela, and Boxwood.
Angel White Lilac Care
Plant Lilacs in full sun or part shade. Make sure the soil is rich and well draining. Lilacs will grow in a wide range of soil pH but bloom best when the soil is on the alkaline side. Apply a granular fertilizer in the spring formulated for flowering shrubs. Supplemental watering will be needed at all stages of the shrub's growth. Lilacs are not drought tolerant and benefit from mulches of organic material.
Angel White Lilac blooms on old wood and should only be pruned directly after flowering has finished in the early summer. Hard pruning is tolerated by all Lilacs and should be done in the summer, so there is plenty of time for the shrubs to set flowers for the following year. Lilacs make short-lived but wonderfully fragrant cut flowers to bring indoors. Cutting the flowering branches also helps to deadhead the shrub.
Angel White Lilac Spacing
Angel White Lilac is a wide-spreading shrub that will benefit from having as much space as possible to reach its mature size. This shrub reaches 12-15 feet high and spreads to 8-12 feet over time. If these Lilacs are going to be used for hedging, they need to be spaced 10 feet apart on center. Place Lilacs at least 4 feet from the foundation of a building if you use them for foundation planting.
