- Deep purple flowers with grape fragrance!
A vibrant stand-out annual in any planting, Angelonia Angelface Super Blue Snapdragon (Angelonia angustifolia) is a violet dream for hot, full-sun locations. The deep-purple flowers bloom in the heat of the summer on an upright stem that can grow up to 40” tall. This upright growing habit, combined with a grape fragrance, makes them perfect as long-lasting cut flowers. Angelonia loves the sun and the heat of sunny patios, south-facing decks and exposed gardens. Other design ideas include planting into perennial gardens to fill empty spaces or provide colorful interest as mass plantings.
Use Angelface snapdragons as a tall, colorful “thriller” in your full-sun containers to reap the rewards of this low-maintenance, heat-loving annual. They bloom all season, require no deadheading, and look beautiful as other flowers wilt in the heat. If you’ve found yourself in need of hardy annuals in the heat of the summer, Angelonia are a great choice. They easily withstand planting in the heat of the summer, and will bloom until the first frost.
Angelface Super Blue Summer Snapdragon Care
Angelonia are low-maintenance plants that thrive in hot, sunny conditions. They thrive when planted in mid-to-late spring and summer. No deadheading is required. However, they do make long-lasting cut flowers, so remember to cut them and enjoy them in bouquets. Angelonia can withstand anything from wet soils to short dry spells. Water anytime the top inch of soil in the container is dry to the touch. A small amount of fertilizer or compost can be added to encourage vigorous bloom and growth.
Angelonia are best grown outdoors as an annual. Whether you plant them in containers to provide the big “thrill” or plant them into your garden to add a pop of color, they will offer a low-maintenance beauty to your sunny space. Angelonia bloom beautifully all season long, until temperatures start to drop. Cover them during cold nights to extend their bloom time.
Angelface Super Blue Summer Snapdragon Spacing
Give these tall, vigorous plants room to grow in containers and garden plantings. When planting in containers, they can be planted closer together at around 10” apart. In the garden, opt for plant spacing of about 14” apart. If you’d like to form a mass planting or border of Angelonia in your garden, plant closer together.
