August Beauty Gardenia is grown for the fragrance as much as the flowers, with large double white blooms perfuming gardens from spring into summer. Gardenia jasminoides 'August Beauty' has glossy, dark green evergreen foliage that makes the creamy blooms look even richer. This rounded shrub reaches about 5 feet tall and 3 feet wide in natural form, with some plants growing larger in long, warm seasons. Place it where people slow down, such as beside a gate or porch step, because the scent deserves to be noticed.
This selection keeps the classic corsage-style gardenia flower in a manageable landscape shrub. August Beauty Gardenia handles heat and humidity well in Zones 8-11, and it is generally avoided by deer once established. The flowers are excellent for cutting, floating in a shallow bowl, or bringing into a room for fragrance. Use it as a fragrant hedge, foundation shrub, container accent, espalier, privacy planting, or specimen near outdoor seating.
August Beauty Gardenia Care
Plant August Beauty Gardenia in full sun to partial sun, choosing morning sun with afternoon shade in hot climates. It performs best in organically rich, well-drained acidic soil that stays evenly moist. Aim for a pH of 4.5 to 6.0, since alkaline soil can lead to pale or yellowing leaves.
Water deeply and regularly during the first growing season, keeping the root zone consistently moist while avoiding saturated soil. Established plants need less frequent watering, but container plants and shrubs near paving may dry out quickly during heat. Feed after blooming with an acid-loving fertilizer, or fertilize during the active season according to the product label. Mulch with pine bark or pine straw to keep shallow roots cool and help maintain soil moisture.
Prune August Beauty Gardenia in summer after the main bloom cycle finishes. Thin crowded interior stems to improve airflow, and remove spent flowers, dead wood, or broken branches as needed. Handle transplanting carefully because gardenia roots dislike disturbance. Avoid fall fertilizing that can encourage tender growth before cold weather.
August Beauty Gardenia Spacing
Space August Beauty Gardenia 3 to 4 feet apart for a hedge, or 5 feet apart when growing it as a specimen with room to mature. For containers, use a pot at least 20 inches wide with drainage holes and an acidic, well-drained potting mix. Potted gardenias need consistent moisture checks and bright protected light, plus winter protection outside Zones 8-11.
Plant August Beauty Gardenia with azaleas and rhododendron, camellia, agapanthus, and ferns in acidic beds with filtered sun and steady moisture. Hellebore can fill the front of a protected border while gardenia carries the fragrance and evergreen mass. In containers, fuchsia, lobelia, or impatiens can add seasonal color around the shrub in bright shade to morning sun.
