A bit down? Eager to find bluer skies? Well, a Scot might tell you to start searching for better fortune in a local meadow of plush, woody-smelling, amethyst heather, believed to be a symbol of good luck. How would you find a bit of this perennial ornamental plant if you weren’t sauntering in the Scottish isles? Simple. Order Beauty Ladies® Siska Scotch Heather, otherwise known as Calluna vulgaris Beauty Ladies® 'Siska', Scots Heather, Common Heather, and Ling. This gorgeous scotch heather hybrid is almost indistinguishable from its Scottish cousins. It reaches a maximum height and spread of about 2 feet and provides waves of floral color in shades of magenta and plum from late summer to late fall along with complimentary evergreen foliage. This perennial ornamental will make you feel as if good luck has come your way all year.
Deer resistant, Beauty Ladies® Siska Scotch Heather’s evergreen foliage poses minimal problems. Once this flowering shrub becomes established, it also becomes drought tolerant. Low maintenance and growing upright, this perennial is perfect for any new gardener who has minimal free time to spare. Compact, this low-growing European original is ideally used as ground cover. Also a pollinator’s favorite, Beauty Ladies® Siska Scotch Heather’s will delight hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees alike.
Beauty Ladies® Siska Scotch Heather Care
Beauty Ladies® Siska Scotch Heather thrives in full sun. While this woody ornamental can withstand poor soils, it prefers moist, acidic soil that drains well. The soil’s pH should fall somewhere in between 5.1 to 6.5. This salt-tolerant evergreen requires about an inch of water per week. To prevent fungal disease such as root rot, however, do a moisture check prior to watering. This low-maintenance plant requires minimal feeding; amend the soil during its initial planting and the plant will do the rest.
While this low-maintenance shrub does not require frequent pruning, Beauty Ladies® Siska Scotch Heather does require shearing once per year in February or March. Shearing is done to remove faded blooms and leafless stems, improving the appearance of the plant.
Beauty Ladies® Siska Scotch Heather Spacing
This showy ornamental shrub can be grown in rock gardens, borders, or containers. When mass planting, space these evergreens at least two feet apart. If planting in a container, however, choose a pot with a diameter of at least a foot and a half.
