Loved for its scent and by pollinators far and wide, lavender is a long-time favorite of gardeners. Big Time Blue Lavender is a special cultivar, as it produces extra-long flower spikes in deep dark blue that tower above its green-gray foliage. Blooming from late spring until early fall, it remains fairly compact at two feet high by two feet wide. With a strong root system and vigorous growth, it is a great perennial for adding impact to your garden or patio.
Big Time Blue Lavender develops a pleasing rounded habit and is ideal for planting individually in containers or for mass planting in borders. Being drought tolerant it is easy to care for and is low maintenance. Often grown for its calming scent and medicinal oils, this lavender is perfect for sourcing cut flowers or making fragrant sachets. As a perennial plant, it will die back in winter, ready to bloom again the following year.
Big Time Blue Lavender Care
To get the best blooms, this Big Time Blue Lavender is best grown in full sun. As with all lavenders, this cultivar needs to be grown in a free-draining soil that is neutral to alkaline. Regular watering is required after planting, but once established, it needs little attention. Beware of growing this plant in overly wet or waterlogged soils though: if there is one thing lavenders don’t like, it is a soggy root system.
The scented flowers can be harvested in summer or deadheaded to encourage more flowers. In spring, the plant can be tidied up by removing roughly one-third of the green growth. Do not cut back into old wood as it may not regrow. In colder areas, container plants can be moved under cover to overwinter, those grown in the ground can benefit from an added layer of mulch to help insulate the roots from cold temperatures.
Big Time Blue Lavender Spacing
If growing Big Time Blue Lavender individually in a planter, a minimum planter size of 16 inches wide is recommended to accommodate its mature size. If planting en masse or to form an informal hedge, lavender plants should be spaced around 18 to 20 inches apart.
