The blue-green foliage of the Black Hills Spruce makes it particularly attractive. Also known botanically as Picea glauca 'Densata', this hardy evergreen tree can grow to around 30 to 40 feet. Great for the birds, the Black Hills Spruce provides a welcome habitat for nesting wildlife. As a tough evergreen, Black Hills Spruce is a versatile tree with many uses.

Being deer and salt tolerant makes this tree ideal for both rural and urban locations alike. Naturally forming a conical shape, its branches are strong and able to withstand the winter’s snow. Perfect for providing privacy when used as a screen, the Black Hills Spruce is also often grown as a standalone species so it can be appreciated.

Black Hills Spruce Care

Since this tree can grow in excess of 30 feet, care must be taken when planning where to plant it to avoid any structural issues in the future. Preferring full to partial sun, Black Hills Spruce grows best in a fertile and free-draining soil that is slightly acidic. Regular and thorough irrigation is needed for the first few years until it has established. When grown on a fertile substrate, extra fertilization is not strictly necessary. That being said, you can apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring at least one year after planting. Mulching around the base of the trunk will not only help conserve moisture but also keep any weeds at bay.

As a low-maintenance specimen, the Black Hills Spruce does not need regular pruning. However, you can remove any damaged material at any time of year or raise the canopy in late winter as needed.

Black Hills Spruce Spacing

When fully grown, the Black Hills Spruce can reach 30 to 40 feet tall and 15 to 25 feet wide. If growing to form a wind break, you can space this tree around 12 to 20 feet apart, center to center.
