Heuchera is a versatile and adaptable plant that can thrive in various conditions while introducing unexpected color into an outdoor space. The Black Sea Coral Bells is a lush and leafy perennial with large scalloped foliage in a deep glossy red that almost appears purple or black depending on the light. The foliage is a showstopper that will stand out in a sea of traditionally green plants. In mid-summer, tall stems topped by cream-colored bell-shaped flowers emerge and hover over the foliage.

The Black Sea Coral Bells is a vigorous-growing, mounded perennial. Plant Coral Bells in beds, borders, or mass plantings. The dark foliage provides a nice contrast against other plants and hardscaping and continues to last into the winter in some regions. This hardy plant grows as a perennial in USDA zones 4 through 8 and can handle full to partial sun, making it easy to maintain.

Black Sea Coral Bells Care

Plant Black Sea Coral Bells in full to partial sun in rich, moist, well-draining soil. The foliage color may fade if the plant is constantly in full sun, so select a spot with afternoon shade to maintain the vibrant color. Give the plant one inch of water per week, although established plants can handle drier conditions. Coral Bells are not heavy feeders, and a dose of balanced, slow-release fertilizer in the spring will support plenty of new growth.

The foliage will die back after the first frost in cold climates, but dead growth can be left to insulate the roots during the winter. Remove all dead or damaged growth in the spring.

Black Sea Coral Bells Spacing

The Black Sea Coral Bells is a mounded perennial that will grow 14 to 24 inches tall and 20 to 26 inches wide. Space plants 1 to 2 feet apart, depending on how dense you want the foliage to appear.
