Growing Zones
Black Tulip Magnolia Explodes in spring with the largest and darkest colored blooms of any Magnolia variety. Gardeners in cold climates can grow this spring beauty and not worry about losing flowers to late-season frosts and freezes. The deeply colored petal-like tepals are thick and tough to protect the delicate flower within from unpredictable temperature fluctuations in spring. Use Magnolia ‘Black Tulip’ as an anchor for an early spring bulb garden or to add contrast to a broadleaf evergreen shrub plan. Anywhere this gorgeous smaller tree is planted will become the center of springtime interest!
Black Tulip Magnolia is a moderately fast-growing tree that tops out at 20 feet after 10 years. The shorter height makes it easy to place in smaller gardens or even containers. Younger specimens may need temporary protection from deer browsing, although mature trees are usually ignored. Black Tulip Magnolia is a hybrid cultivar originally imported from New Zealand. The parent plants are a mix of many varieties including ‘Vulcan’ and ‘Iolanthe’.
Black Tulip Magnolia Care
Plant Black Tulip away from overhead utility lines to avoid having to make awkward and possibly disfiguring pruning cuts when the tree is mature. Provide deep, loamy soil with enough space for the tree’s root system to grow. Amend heavy or sandy soils with organic compost to improve the texture, drainage, and moisture retention. Water this tree consistently 2-3 times a week for the first few years. Once Black Tulip is established, it will be more resistant to short periods of drought.
While the tree is young, light pruning may be necessary. Only remove branches that are crossing each other or causing congestion on the inside of the canopy. The goal is to establish an open canopy of branches that will not rub or bend each other as the tree matures. Make cuts that support a natural vase shape.
Heavy fertilizing is not required for Magnolia species, although a seasonal application of a tree and shrub feed can be helpful for the first few years. Follow the manufacturer’s application guidelines and apply early in the spring as the flower buds begin to appear.
Black Tulip Magnolia Spacing
Consider the mature size of the Black Tulip Magnolia when siting it in your garden. The height will reach 15-20 feet and the overall spread is typically 10-15 feet, making the profile much more vertical than horizontal. Space the tree at least 10 feet away from a building foundation, driveway, or large shrub to allow for spreading limbs. Shallow-rooted perennials and bulbs can be planted as close as 12 inches from the root flare of the tree.
