The Blue Gold Blueberry is a low-maintenance perennial that boasts a large harvest and adds color and visual interest to an outdoor space. White bell-shaped flowers bloom in May, and by summer, the Vaccinium corymbosum will have an abundant crop of nickel-size fruit. Large berries are firm and have a sweet taste with slight tart hints. Eat the berries fresh or use them in jams, preserves, or baking. This upright, deciduous bush has green foliage that will turn reddish-orange in the fall, creating a vibrant display.
Blue Gold Blueberry Care
Plant in full to partial sun. The Blue Gold Blueberry will reach 5 to 6 feet tall and 4 to 5 feet wide. When planting in rows, space each bush 4 to 6 feet apart. Plant in rich, acidic soil with a pH of 4.8 to 5.2. The soil should be moist but well-draining.
Growing Blue Gold Blueberry
You may want to pinch back flowers in the first year to encourage the plant to push out more growth and acclimate. Not having a crop the first year may help the plant have a more productive growing season the following year and onward. Prune the plant in late winter to maintain its shape.
Growing Blue Gold Blueberry in Containers
The Blue Gold Blueberry is more compact and smaller than many other varieties, and one plant can be grown in a 12-inch pot. Place the container in a sunny spot and water when the top couple of inches of soil dry out.
Watering Blue Gold Blueberry
Plants need 1 to 2 inches of water weekly for the first two growing seasons. Established plants can thrive with rainwater, but be prepared to water the plants during a drought or dry period. The Blue Gold Blueberry will need an inch of water every week and a half.
Feeding Blue Gold Blueberry
Apply an acid fertilizer in the spring to encourage plenty of blooms and a large crop of berries. Follow up the feeding with a layer of organic compost spread around the base of the plant.
