Blue Lace Bee Delphinium creates a magnificent display of densely packed, tall flower spikes that add a vertical form to contrast more rounded plants. The electric-blue flowers melt into deep lavender, towering above a mounded, sturdy plant. This delphinium reaches 5-6 ft high with a spread of 2 ft. It is cold hardy in zones 3-7. Its early summer color attracts hummingbirds and pollinators, and is beautiful in cut-flower arrangements. The first flush is often followed by a rebloom later in the summer.
Blue Lace Bee Delphiniums are bred to have excellent mildew resistance, color, form, and strong sturdy stems to support their towering height. This is a vigorous-growing perennial that rabbits and deer ignore. Tall, beautiful, deep-blue flower spikes seem to glow with electricity in the garden and are equally gorgeous in cut-flower arrangements.
Blue Lace Bee Delphinium Care
Select a full or partial sun location with moist, well-draining soil amended with rich organic matter. Planting in compost-rich soil is a must for Blue Lace to get plenty of essential nutrients. Before planting outdoors, you may need to harden off the plant, which simply means moving your new plant to a sheltered outdoor place for about a week to acclimate it to its new environment. Remove spent flower spikes after the bloom is finished. Cut the plant back after the first hard frost in early winter.
Regular deadheading will prompt repeat blooming throughout the summer to fall. You may need to stake the flowers if planted in an unprotected, windy area. Consider using a diluted liquid bloom-boosting fertilizer once in the spring and again in the summer.
Blue Lace Bee Delphinium Spacing
Blue Lace is lovely as a majestic, eye-catching, back-layer border or in a mixed mass planting. Space plants roughly 24” apart. Blue Lace Bee Delphiniums have strong sturdy stems, but if planted in open areas exposed to high winds, consider staking the flower stems.
