Hardy Ageratum (Eupatorium coelestinum) also known as Blue Mistflower or Blue Boneset, is an upright, branched wildflower that is part of the Aster family. Their soft, eye-catching bluish-purple, fuzzy flowers appear from mid-summer through fall. Ageratums attract bees, butterflies, and a variety of important pollinators. This perennial grows in hardiness zones 4-8. Hardy Ageratum reaches 2-3 ft in height and width when mature. Its native habitats are along stream banks, sunlit wetlands, and meadows. As a bonus, this plant is deer resistant.

The attractive red stems of Blue Mistflower support fuzzy, lilac-blue flowers with bright-green leaves; the flowers provide profuse, long-lasting color from late summer through fall. Easy to grow, Hardy Ageratum can be used in a variety of garden types such as rain, cottage, and pollinator gardens, and is also excellent for areas that need erosion control.

Blue Mistflower Care

Blue Mistflower is an adaptable wildflower that can grow in a variety of locations in partial to full sun. The sunnier the location, the more moisture the soil should have. This wildflower prefers moist, well-draining soil. Blue Mistflower is an important nectar source for butterflies, skippers, and native bees.

Hardy Ageratum is an adaptable perennial wildflower that is naturally found at the edges of woods and woodland clearings, on banks of lakes, creeks, rivers, and wet prairies, and often found in open sunny meadows.

Blue Mistflower Spacing

Used as a border perennial, space plants 20” apart or slightly closer together when used as a colonizing groundcover. These plants spread quickly and are excellent for naturalizing an open area. When Blue Mistflower is planted en masse, the eye-catching, misty-blue drifts of color make a big impact.
