Blue Moon Wisteria (Wisteria macrostachya ‘Blue Moon’) features stunning cascades of lavender-blue flowers in the early summer. Wisteria can be a quick grower and reach up to 25 feet tall and 6 feet wide when mature. This vining shrub can bloom multiple times in a single season. Many types of Wisteria bloom only in the spring, but the Blue Moon Wisteria blooms in the spring and twice in the summer. The Blue Moon Wisteria looks beautiful when climbing on archways, pergolas, gazebos and garden walls. This plant is tough, cold hardy down to -20 degrees Fahrenheit, and can be grown throughout the United States.
The Blue Moon Wisteria blooms will attract butterflies to your backyard with a sweet floral scent. The Blue Moon Wisteria has a vining habit. Its climbing tendencies make it perfect for staking up near fences, trellises, or iron archways. The vines may become heavy with the large and enticing blooms, so the structure it climbs should be sturdy.
Blue Moon Wisteria Care
The hole you dig should be no deeper than the soil in the pot and only double the width. Use mulch to regulate soil moisture levels. Blue Moon needs a support to climb such as a trellis or arbor. After planting, wisteria may take a few years to flower. This plant needs plenty of space to grow. Plant it in the spring or fall while the plant is dormant. Find a location far enough away from your home so it won't attach itself to it. Wisteria is known to get heavy and will climb any nearby structure.
Keep the soil moist until the plant is established. Water Blue Moon thoroughly about every week for the first year. After the first year, allow the soil to dry between waterings. Water your plant if your area receives less than one inch of rain per week. Ideally, this plant should receive around 4 gallons of water per week. Water in the morning or evening at the base of the plant. Blue Moon won’t require much fertilizing. Each spring apply compost for vigorous growth. If you live in an area that has poor soil, use a small amount of 5-10-5 or 5-10-10 fertilizer in the spring. Blue Moon Wisteria prefers slightly acidic soil but is known to adapt to different soils. Add peat moss or compost at time of planting for best results. This vine needs full sunlight to thrive, but will tolerate partial shade. Though wisteria will grow in partial shade, they probably won’t flower, so providing adequate sunlight is essential.
Wisteria needs to be pruned about twice a year during late winter and mid-summer. Prune wisteria late in the winter to remove at least half of the prior year’s growth. During the summer, pruning your Wisteria will encourage more blooms. Pruning is essential for promoting great blooms. Wisteria flowers from new growth off of the main stem. During the growing season, trim your plant when you see suckers/shoots growing at its base. You can deadhead the blooms throughout the growing season to encourage consistent growth.
Blue Moon Wisteria Spacing
Wisteria plants should be planted 10 to 15 feet apart for best results. This plant is known to be toxic to pets and humans; the toxins can cause nausea and diarrhea and even death if consumed in large enough quantities, so be cautious of where you plant wisteria. Remove the seed pods if it is planted near pets or children.
