If you are looking for a smaller hedging plant that is both ornamental and edible, Blue Spires Rosemary could be your solution. Native to the Mediterranean region, rosemary will form a dense hedge of gloriously scented evergreen foliage. Blue Spires Rosemary requires little pruning or seasonal maintenance to maintain an upright, compact growth habit. Pale blue flowers dependably cover this essential culinary herb throughout the summer and are as edible as the leaves. Barbeque fanatics will appreciate the extra sturdy and straight branches that make the perfect skewer for shish kabobs while imparting the green and floral flavor to your food.
Blue Spires Rosemary is fully hardy and evergreen in USDA growing zones 7-10. Colder climates can grow Blue Spires as a container plant for the deck or patio and bring it into a sunny spot to overwinter indoors. Deer rarely browse on rosemary and particularly dislike its scent. Few pests or diseases are a problem when this herb is grown in full sun.
Because Blue Spires Rosemary has such a fabulous upright shape, it is a natural choice for screening a fence, adding to a mixed hedge, or controlling erosion on a rocky, sunny hillside. It can reach up to 5 feet, making this one of the tallest rosemary shrubs available.
Blue Spires Rosemary Care
Rosemary shrubs require well-draining soil, low fertility, and full sun to grow successfully. Fertilizing is not regularly needed. Watering is required for the first season or two until the root system is established. Upon establishment, supplemental watering is rarely needed. Rosemary thrives on poor, well-drained soil with a neutral pH. Make sure the soil drains well year-round; rosemary often dies in the winter due to standing water or seasonal flooding that causes root rot when the weather warms in the spring.
Prune out any damaged, diagonal, dead, or diseased branches early in the spring as the weather warms. A light pruning can be done for shaping after the shrubs have bloomed in late summer. Cutting back branches to a main stem will help maintain the upright look of Blue Spires. Prune lightly and judiciously, as rosemary does not respond well to hard pruning. Taking softwood and semi-hardwood cuttings in the summer is the best way to propagate new shrubs for the future.
Rosemary can grow well in containers with excellent drainage and plenty of perlite added to the potting mix. Potted plants tend to grow slower and smaller than garden-grown rosemary.
Blue Spires Rosemary Spacing
Blue Spires Rosemary averages 5 feet tall and 3 feet wide at maturity. Space plants 30 inches apart when planting in large groups or as hedging. Container-grown rosemary will require a pot with at least a 16-inch diameter and large base to balance out a top-heavy shape.
