Blueberry Delight Juniper, or Juniperus comm. ‘Blueberry Delight’ is an ornamental evergreen with a tough, hardy constitution. This easy-to-grow native beauty has incredible, two-toned foliage that is silvery blue on the top and rich, deep green underneath. It is a stunning ground-hugger, growing to a height of only 1 to 2 feet, with a wider spread of 3 to 5 feet. In the autumn, the Blueberry Delight inspires year-round interest with glowing, coppery hues.
Native to the Dakota Badlands and bred by American Beauties Native Plants, the Blueberry Delight Juniper has a sprawling, dense, low-growing form with shimmering foliage that provides low maintenance, year-round interest. It provides excellent cover for songbirds, who use it to build nests safe from predators, and birds love it for its fleshy, berry-like fruit. Despite its delicious sounding name, deer and other critters will avoid the Blueberry Delight Juniper and go in search of tastier options.
Blueberry Delight Juniper Care
Your Blueberry Delight Juniper is a tough plant that can grow in many difficult conditions, including poor soil, extreme cold, and drought conditions. It prefers full to partial sun and moist, fertile soil that has good drainage. In the first few years after planting, mulch the base of the plant to keep the soil cool and moist. Mulching will also help suppress weeds, which is important, since weeding around the prickly branches of your Blueberry Delight Juniper will be rough on delicate skin. Your Juniper is susceptible to spider mites, so watch it for signs of distress like falling needles, sticky deposits, and browning branches.
Blueberry Delight Juniper Spacing
The Blueberry Delight Juniper is ideal for mass planting in areas where other plants have failed due to difficult soil conditions. They are excellent low-growing accents, and provide a picturesque quality to any sloping or rocky landscape. This variety of Juniper is ideal for foundation planting and erosion control and is a staple for commercial property landscapes. You should space your Blueberry Delight Juniper 2 to 3 feet apart from center to center for a dense mass, and 4 to 5 feet apart for a more sprawling look.
