Boldly® Dark Red Geranium Pelargonium interspecific is a classic revel beauty. Its green foliage and deep red flowers are cherished by all ages. The flower blooms from spring to summer, but with a little extra care, it will bloom all year round.
A native to South Africa, Pelargonium interspecific is a cross between a zonal and ivy geranium. This just means it has the best of both plant species. This geranium is semi-trailing, heat, and drought-resistant once established. Boldly Dark Red Geranium provides eye candy a container planting on your patio or as a bedding plant in your flower bed.
Boldly Dark Red Geranium Care
Boldly Dark Red Geranium is easy to maintain but does need some deadheading from time to time, to keep it looking its best. Pelargoniums dislike soggy, compacted soils. Yellowing leaves are a telltale sign that water or light may be an issue. Ensure that this plant dries out between watering and it gets at least 4 to 6 hours of sun daily. Fertilize with a yearly application of compost or fertilizer in the garden bed. When fertilizing containers, apply a half-strength water-soluble fertilizer to keep blooms prolific. Geraniums are annual in zones 8 and below.
The gardener’s trick to keep geranium pelargonium blooming all winter long is to care for it as an indoor houseplant before the frost comes in the fall. In the winter, make sure that this plant receives bright light from supplemental lighting or a bright window. Another way to overwinter geranium pelargonium is to force it into dormancy. Cut the plant down to 6 to 8 inches in the fall, don’t water, and let the plant dry out completely. Remove the soil from the roots, dust roots with sulfur (this acts as a fungicide), and store in a brown paper bag in a cool, dark place (like in a basement). Replant it in the spring when the danger of frost has passed. If this is too much work, then start with a new already established geranium in the spring. New plants are usually more vigorous and are quicker to bloom than the old plants saved from the previous year.
Boldly Dark Red Geranium Spacing
Boldly Dark Red Geranium spreads 12 to 20 inches in both a container or in the landscape. Typically it needs at least a 12-inch container. Mix and match in container plantings or enjoy its solitary beauty.
