Brunswick Lowbush Blueberry is a beautiful, low-growing shrub that produces delicious fruit. The firm powdery-blue berries can be enjoyed straight from the plant or baked into pies, pancakes and muffins. The glossy, dark green foliage turns crimson and burgundy shades in the fall. The bell-shaped flowers are also attractive in shades of white and light pink prior to fruiting.
Reaching only 8 - 12 inches high, this subshrub works well as a dense, low-growing groundcover. This blueberry nourishes native bees, butterflies, and birds when it fruits and flowers. It tolerates cold climates (zone 3) and poor, dry soils. Brunswick Lowbush has no concerning pests or diseases to manage. It is widely adaptable for growing as a low hedge, natural edging for garden beds, groundcover, or container specimen. Plant at least two varieties to increase fruit yield.
Brunswick Lowbush Blueberry Care
Brunswick Blueberries grow well in full sun to part shade, with at least four hours of direct sunlight a day. These blueberries tolerate poor, sandy soil as long as it’s well-drained. They prefer an acidic pH between 4.5 and 5.5. If your soil is on the alkaline side, you can incorporate peat moss, compost or sulfur into the planting hole, and mulch with leaf mold. Water regularly during the growing season and don’t let the soil dry out. Feed in the spring with a fertilizer for acid-loving plants.
Brunswick Lowbush does not require heavy pruning, especially in the first few years after planting. Removal of the oldest stems every 2 – 3 years will increase the fruit yield. Do this in early spring before the shrub puts on new growth.
Brunswick Lowbush Blueberry Spacing
If planting as a tight hedge, space each blueberry plant two feet apart on center. Increase the spacing between plants to at least 3 feet if you would like to be able to walk around the bushes. If growing in a container, use a pot at least 24 inches in diameter to accommodate the extensive root system.
