Add a burst of color to a low-light area of your yard with the Bullseye Mountain Laurel. This broadleaf evergreen shrub, also known as Kalmia latifolia, boasts stunning and unique flowers blooming in clusters, usually during May or June. The bronzy-purple flowers have white accents near the center and the edge. While the blooms are lovely, this shrub also features glossy reddish-bronze foliage and purplish-red stems that offset the flowers. Use this broadleaf evergreen to provide a continuous pop of color in an outdoor area year-round.
The Bullseye Mountain Laurel has a well-branched, rounded form. This shrub is a good choice to use along a foundation wall or outdoor entertaining area to define the space. Feature a single mountain laurel as a focal point in a mixed bed, or create a colorful hedge with several in a row. This shrub supports pollinators and is native to North America, which means it requires little care and attention once established. Grow the Bullseye Mountain Laurel as a perennial in zones 5 through 8.
Bullseye Mountain Laurel Care
The Bullseye Mountain Laurel loves shade, so choose a spot that receives partial sun to full shade. Shrubs in full shade may flower less, so be mindful when selecting a planting location. Bullseye prefers moist, well-drained, acidic soil. Water new plants every few days to once per week. Established plants can often rely on natural rainfall but water during a dry period. Fertilize the Bullseye Mountain Laurel each spring using a fertilizer for acid-loving plants.
Pruning is not often necessary, but you can shape the shrub as needed during the spring, after the flowers fade. Remove the flower clusters to tidy up the look.
Bullseye Mountain Laurel Spacing
The Bullseye Mountain Laurel will spread 8 to 10 feet wide and reach 5 to 6 feet tall when mature. Create a hedge or continuous planting by spacing shrubs 8 feet apart.
