Tuff Stuff® mountain hydrangeas offer colorful lacecap flowers with improved bud hardiness on a compact frame. These reblooming Hydrangea serrata flower first on old wood and again on new growth, with selections sized for containers, foundations, borders, and mass plantings.
Tuff Stuff® hydrangeas are compact mountain hydrangeas selected for colorful lacecap flowers and better bud hardiness in colder climates. They bloom first from overwintered buds on old wood, then form more flowers on new growth during the season.
Mountain hydrangeas and bigleaf hydrangeas are close relatives, but they developed in different environments. Winter cold can damage the overwintered flower buds of bigleaf hydrangeas. By contrast, Hydrangea serrata grows naturally in cooler mountainous areas of Japan, which contributed to better cold tolerance and hardier flower buds. Tuff Stuff® varieties have the cold toughness of mountain hydrangeas plus the ability to rebloom on new growth later in the season.
Tuff Stuff® varieties share the characteristic lacecap form, in which a dense center of small, fertile (pollen-producing) flowers is surrounded by an outer ring of large, showy, sterile florets; however, flower shape, color, and details make each selection distinct.
Most selections stay between 2 and 3 feet tall. Varieties differ the most in flower form and color.

Mature size and flower color can vary with climate, soil, moisture, and growing conditions.
Most Tuff Stuff® flowers can shift between pink and blue-purple depending on soil pH and aluminum availability.
Acidic soil allows hydrangeas to take up available aluminum more readily. When enough aluminum is present, flowers tend toward blue or purple depending on the variety. Tuff Stuff Red® Hydrangea is the exception and maintains red to pink blooms regardless of soil pH.
In alkaline soil, or where aluminum is unavailable to the plant, flower color tends toward pink. Color change takes time, so soil amendments should be used gradually and according to label directions.
Mountain hydrangeas have flatter lacecap flower clusters than the rounded mopheads associated with many bigleaf hydrangeas. Small fertile florets fill the center, surrounded by larger showy florets. The plants themselves remain compact, making the series useful for tight spaces and small urban yards.
Site these compact shrubs carefully so routine maintenance stays minimal.
Give plants enough light to support strong stems and flowering. In hot climates, protect them from the strongest afternoon sun.
Mountain hydrangeas prefer consistent moisture that drains away. A layer of mulch helps protect shallow roots and conserve moisture.
Water newly planted shrubs regularly. Supplemental watering may also be necessary during hot or dry weather.
For consistently strong growth, apply a granular fertilizer formulated for woody plants after the ground thaws and before active spring growth.
Avoid routine pruning because flower buds occur on old and new wood. Remove dead winter-damaged stems in spring after new growth makes them easy to identify.
Mountain hydrangeas evolved in colder conditions than bigleaf hydrangeas, giving their flower buds better tolerance to winter cold.
Compact mature sizes make Tuff Stuff® hydrangeas easy to repeat through a landscape or feature close to patios, entries, and walkways.

About Plant AddictsLearn about reblooming, cold tolerance, flower color, pruning, containers, and differences between varieties.
Tuff Stuff® varieties are mountain hydrangeas, Hydrangea serrata. They are related to bigleaf hydrangeas but typically have more compact habits, lacecap flowers, and better tolerance to winter cold.
Yes. Tuff Stuff® hydrangeas bloom first from flower buds formed on old wood, then produce additional flowers on new growth during the growing season.
Mountain hydrangeas naturally grow in colder mountainous areas and have naturally better bud hardiness than many bigleaf hydrangeas. Their ability to flower again on new growth provides another opportunity for bloom if some overwintered buds are damaged.
They bloom on both. Old wood provides the first flowers of the season, and new growth produces later flowers.
Routine pruning is generally unnecessary and can remove flower buds. In spring, wait for new growth to emerge and remove only stems that are clearly dead or winter damaged. Older shrubs can occasionally have a few of the oldest stems thinned.
Blue and purple tones develop best in acidic soil where aluminum is available for the plant to absorb. Soil pH alone is not enough; aluminum also needs to be present and available. Mix and apply aluminum sulfate or a prepackaged soil acidifier around the plant's drip line.
Flowers tend toward pink in alkaline soil or where aluminum is unavailable. Lime can be used to raise soil pH when appropriate, following the product label and a soil test.
Tiny Tuff Stuff® is the smallest selection, reaching about 18–24 inches tall and wide. Its compact size works well in containers, small beds, and along the front of borders.
Ah-Ha® has doubled showy florets that resemble small waterlilies. It is also a prolific rebloomer, producing additional flower buds on new growth throughout summer.
Top Fun™ combines pink or purple-blue lacecap flowers with green fertile florets in the center and noticeable burgundy stems. It is also hardy to Zone 4.
Yes. Their compact habits make them useful container shrubs. Use a large container with drainage holes, maintain consistent moisture, and provide extra root protection if winters are severe.
Choose Tiny Tuff Stuff® for the smallest spaces, Red® for deeper color, Ah-Ha® for double waterlily-like florets, Top Fun™ for burgundy stems and colorful lacecaps, or the original Tuff Stuff® for the classic reblooming mountain hydrangea.
