The Tiny Tuff Stuff™ Hydrangea by Proven Winners ColorChoice® is the smallest, most compact hydrangea we offer. Don’t let that fool you though. This shrub packs a colorful punch, with beautiful flowers that rebloom all season long. Being small doesn’t impact the toughness of this plant either. This mountain hydrangea can tolerate very cold winter conditions, and does very well in areas that bigleaf hydrangeas struggle in.

The flowers are either pink, purple or blue depending on soil pH. The blooms will be more lavender or pink in alkaline soils, and blue in soils with a lower pH. Add aluminum sulfate to lower the pH of the soil, and encourage blue flowers.

Tiny Tuff Stuff Hydrangea Care

These miniature hydrangeas need well-drained soil. We also recommend adding a layer of mulch, which does two things. First, the mulch helps protect the shallow roots in cold climates. Second, the mulch helps keep moisture around the plant. And hydrangeas love water, as long as the roots don't sit in it. Plant this shrub in a location that gets at least 6 hours of sunlight. Afternoon shade is best for this plant, especially in hot southern locations.

You do not need to prune Tiny Tuff Stuff hydrangeas. These plants are already small, and grow in a mounding habit naturally. Also, the plant flowers on new and old wood. So pruning may inadvertently remove flower buds for the next blooming season. We do recommend trimming off dead or sick branches as needed throughout the year.

Fertilize in early spring using a controlled-release fertilizer. Do so before new growth starts to appear on the plant. The fertilizer should be formulated for woody plants such as roses or trees.

Tiny Tuff Stuff Hydrangea Spacing

These shrubs should be planted 18 to 24 inches apart, center on center. If you choose to grow Tiny Tuff Stuff as a landscaping border, you can space plants 18 inches apart, center on center. These hydrangeas also do very well in garden planters. Select a container at least 18 inches wide for this shrub.
