Jazz Hands® Chinese fringe-flowers pair spring blooms with evergreen foliage that stays interesting long after flowering ends. The collection ranges from the ground-hugging Jazz Hands Mini® at just 10–12 inches tall to Jazz Hands Bold® at 5–6 feet, with green, purple, burgundy, and variegated foliage in between.

Jazz Hands® loropetalums were selected for distinctive foliage, strong plant form, spring flowers, and useful sizes. Some stay low enough for edging and containers. Others form substantial evergreen shrubs for foundations, hedges, mass plantings, and focal points.
Narrow, ribbon-like petals create the loose fringe flowers characteristic of Loropetalum chinense. Most Jazz Hands® selections bloom pink against dark foliage, but White and Night Moves® provide white-flowered options.
See how the hot pink flowers stand out against the cool purple foliage and how the compact, mounded habit fits into landscapes and container gardens.
Size and foliage provide some of the clearest differences between varieties. Compare mature dimensions, flower color, foliage, and useful landscape roles.
| Variety | Flowers | Foliage | Mature Size | Why Choose It |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jazz Hands Mini® | Pink | Black-purple | 10–12" H × 3' W | Lowest habit; useful as groundcover, edging, and in containers |
| Jazz Hands Night Moves® | White | Plum, developing green, white & purple variegation | 2–4' H × 2–4' W | Compact habit with unusual multicolored foliage |
| Jazz Hands® White | White | Dark green | 3–5' H × 3–5' W | White flowers with sporadic summer rebloom |
| Jazz Hands® Pink | Fuchsia pink | Burgundy new growth maturing dark purple | 3–5' H × 3–5' W | Midsize form with colorful foliage and horizontal branching |
| Jazz Hands® Velvet | Pink | Rich burgundy | 3–5' H × 3–5' W | Long-lasting dark foliage and good heat tolerance |
| Jazz Hands Variegated® | Pink | Pink & white new growth maturing purple | 4–6' H × 4' W | Distinctive pink-white variegation for specimens and hedges |
| Jazz Hands Bold® | Rich pink | Large purple leaves with pink spring flush | 5–6' H × 5–6' W | Largest flowers and foliage in the collection |
Mature dimensions can vary with climate, growing conditions, and pruning.
Jazz Hands® loropetalums are evergreen shrubs, so foliage does much of the work after flowering ends. Purple, burgundy, green, and variegated leaves add contrast alongside lighter evergreens, flowering perennials, grasses, and green foundation shrubs.
Size helps determine placement. Mini® stays low enough for the front of a bed. Night Moves® fits smaller spaces. Pink, White, and Velvet work as midsize shrubs. Variegated® and Bold® have enough presence for larger borders, hedges, and focal points.
Both varieties produce multicolored foliage, but their colors, timing, and mature size create very different effects.
New growth develops splashes of pink and white before maturing purple. Its variegation becomes more pronounced later in the season as temperatures rise. Consistent moisture and active growth help produce the strongest display.
Night Moves® starts spring with deep plum foliage and white flowers. New growth later develops a mix of white, deep green, and purple. Its smaller habit makes the multicolor foliage easy to use near paths and foundations.
A 2026 cytogenetics study screened 54 Loropetalum lines and found one triploid cultivar: Jazz Hands Bold® ‘Kurenai Daiou.’ Triploid plants have three sets of chromosomes rather than the usual two, and chromosome counting confirmed 36 chromosomes in Bold®.
Bold® is also known for unusually large leaves and flowers. The researchers noted that enlarged plant parts can occur with increased ploidy in ornamental plants. Read the study.
Good light, well-drained soil, and steady moisture support the foliage color and spring flower display that set this series apart.
Full sun supports strong flowering and deep foliage color. Most selections also grow in part sun. Night Moves® should receive at least four hours of good sun.
Soil that drains freely but retains moisture is important for steady growth. Acidic conditions support the best foliage color. Avoid sites that remain wet or soggy.
Water regularly during establishment. Mature plants can tolerate some dry periods, but consistent moisture supports flowering, foliage quality, and variegation.
Apply a granular fertilizer in early spring. Additional summer feeding can support foliage color and active growth, particularly in containers or poorer soils.
Jazz Hands® loropetalums bloom on old wood and rarely need routine pruning. Shape plants after the main spring flower display if needed.
Most selections grow in Zones 7–9. Choose a protected location near the northern edge of the range and mulch around the root zone.
Compact and midsize Jazz Hands® selections add dark foliage, flowers, and structure to patio containers. They can work as solo specimens or as the woody anchor in a mixed planting.

About Plant AddictsLearn about mature size, planting, pruning, container growing, foliage color, and differences between Jazz Hands® varieties.
The series ranges from Jazz Hands Mini® at about 10–12 inches tall to Jazz Hands Bold® at roughly 5–6 feet tall and wide. Several selections fall between 2 and 5 feet, giving gardeners options for edging, containers, foundation plantings, hedges, and larger borders.
Jazz Hands Mini® is the lowest-growing selection. It reaches about 10–12 inches tall and spreads around 3 feet, making it useful for edging, groundcover, the front of borders, and containers.
Poor drainage, prolonged dryness, insufficient light, and unsuitable soil conditions can reduce flowering, growth, and foliage color. Jazz Hands® selections perform best in well-drained soil with regular moisture and enough light to support strong growth.
Spring and fall are useful planting periods because temperatures are generally moderate. Water regularly after planting so the root system can establish before periods of intense heat or cold.
Prune after the main spring bloom if shaping is necessary. Jazz Hands® loropetalums bloom on old wood, so pruning later in the season can remove flower buds that would bloom the following spring. Routine pruning is usually unnecessary when the variety is matched to the available space.
Jazz Hands Variegated® develops pink and white markings on new growth that later matures purple. Jazz Hands Night Moves® starts with plum foliage and later develops a mix of white, green, and purple. The two varieties create noticeably different foliage effects.
Jazz Hands® White and Jazz Hands Night Moves® both produce white flowers. White has dark green foliage and can flower sporadically after its main spring display. Night Moves® pairs white spring flowers with plum foliage that later develops multicolored variegation.
Jazz Hands Bold® is the largest selection in this group and is known for especially large leaves and flowers. A 2026 cytogenetics study also identified ‘Kurenai Daiou’ Jazz Hands Bold® as triploid, making it genetically unusual among the Loropetalum accessions evaluated in that study.
Yes. Mini®, Night Moves®, Pink, White, and Velvet are especially useful in containers. Choose a container with drainage holes, use well-drained potting mix, and monitor moisture closely during hot weather.
Plant Jazz Hands Mini® in sun to part sun with well-drained acidic soil. Water regularly during establishment. Its naturally low, spreading habit generally needs little pruning. If shaping is necessary, prune after spring flowering.
Choose Mini® for the lowest habit, Night Moves® or Variegated® for multicolored foliage, White for white flowers and repeat bloom, Pink for a versatile midsize shrub, Velvet for deep burgundy foliage, or Bold® for the largest flowers, leaves, and overall presence.
