A relative of the coreopsis, bidens are native to warm and temperate zones in the United State and Canada, and are also found in Africa, Asia, some parts of Europe and Polynesia. Like the glow of a flame from a campfire, reddish orange petals radiate out from deep yellow centers creating an intense pop of color contrast to the cooler green foliage.
If the brilliant color doesn’t grab you, this continuous bloomer with flowers that stay open for long periods of time fading only to allow more blossoms to push forward will. From spring to fall, you will enjoy this heat loving annual in your part to full sun garden. These are easy to care for plants that will give more than they get from you all season long.
Campfire Flame Bidens Care
Requiring a medium maintenance schedule of light fertilization and watering, this rebloomer prefers a slightly acid soil of 5.8 to 6.2. It is cold sensitive, so put plants out after the danger of last frost. It functions well as a container plant as well as being massed out in your landscape or border. Insect infestations are not common, but air circulation is key to keeping it vigorous.
Deadheading is not required, but due to its enthusiasm when planted where it thrives best, some shearing or light pruning may be necessary to keep it within its bounds. Container gardening makes this an easy process for you. Enjoy pairing this low to medium annual with sedums, solenostemons, calibrachoas, medium tall grasses, dahlias and chartreuse ipomoeas, or sweet potato vines.
Campfire Flame Bidens Spacing
As with most plants planted in moist soil and light shade, powdery mildew can become a problem that is easily solved with proper plant spacing. Topping out at about 14 inches and spreading up to 16 inches, bidens will appreciate room to grow, about 10 to 12 inches apart will work fine. As a hybrid, Campfire Flame Bidens will not reseed and take over your garden year after year so cleaning up after cold weather returns is easy.
