The contrasting salmon-pink petals and deep purple stamens of the Carneum Oriental Poppy will add a touch of elegance to your garden when they bloom in early summer. A hardy perennial, Papaver orientale 'Carneum' features dissected green foliage and flowers from June through August. With a height of just over 2 feet, this oriental poppy has a multitude of garden uses.

The Carneum Oriental Poppy is hardy in zones 3 to 7 and is originally from parts of the Middle East. A sun-loving plant, it is ideal for dotting around a mixed border or growing in a group. It is also highly effective when used as a cut flower.

Carneum Oriental Poppy Care

The Carneum Oriental Poppy flowers best when it is planted in full sun. It prefers a free-draining and neutral soil and will not tolerate heavy clay soils unless the drainage has been improved. Water when the soil is dry, but avoid overwatering and waterlogged soil, which can lead to root rot. Fertilize using a balanced, slow-release feed in spring.

Spent flowers can be left for seed heads to form. Cut back hard in early winter and mulch to help insulate the roots.

Carneum Oriental Poppy Spacing

The Carneum Oriental Poppy tends to grow to around 24 to 30 inches tall and 20 to 24 inches wide. You can space this poppy 18 to 24 inches apart depending on the desired effect.
