What a fun color this frost sensitive annual shamrock brings to your landscape or container gardens! Deep plum purple triangular shaped leaves on bright green stems sport blush pink flowers...what’s not to love? This shade tolerant annual will bring that much needed color to that sun challenged spot in your landscape or shaded patio garden. Grow in sun or shade, be aware that too much sun can scorch the leaves.
Native to Brazil in South America, zones 8a through 11b can grow this plant as a year round ground cover. Zones 2-7 will enjoy it as a spring and summer annual and bring it indoors for the winter to enjoy its unusual color year round. Oxalis triangularis has a charming habit of closing its leaves at night and unfurling them in the morning light.
Charmed Wine Shamrock Care
Easy to grow and care for, give O. triangularis a sandy, loamy soil that drains well. It prefers a soil pH of 5.8 to 6.2 so it pairs well with other slightly acid soil loving annuals. Fertilize once a season for in ground plantings and once a month for container plants for lush growth. Too little light can cause leggy, lanky growth habits, so be sure to plant where it receives some sun. Water only when dry and don’t place them where the ground is soggy as it hates to have wet feet.
Deadheading is not necessary as the blush pink flowers will clean up after themselves. Pruning is not recommended, but cutting back to the soil should it become leggy due to not enough light will encourage new growth and flowering. Pairing this wonderful rich colored foliage with bright calibrachoa, superbena, lantana, caladium and coleus makes a wonderful display for your container garden.
Charmed Wine Shamrock Spacing
Space plantings out 12 to 14 inches as this light shade loving annual can grow up to 16 inches tall and spread out to 12 inches wide. This variety of oxalis does not spread wildly and become invasive so rest assured it will behave in your landscape garden. Mass it out in woodland edges as it is deer and rabbit resistant. Divide plants in warmer regions while actively growing but be aware that the divisions will be cold sensitive afterward and should be protected in winter.
