The Christmas Carol™ Camellia makes easy work of decorating your outdoor space for the holidays. This striking plant is a Camellia japonica variety that blooms in the fall, and flowers last until Christmas. The bell-shaped semi-double flowers have petals with soft red centers that fade to white along the edges. The flowers gently hang from the semi-weeping branches of this shrub, also known as Camellia x vernalis.
The vibrant blooms of this plant are eye-catching, and the dark green pointed foliage with serrated edges provide a nice contrast. Use the Christmas Carol™ Camellia as a hedge, mass planting, privacy planting, or as an accent. This plant can be grown in a container which provides some flexibility and the ability to easily move the plant when using it as part of your holiday decor. This plant is a perennial in USDA zones 7 through 9.
Christmas Carol™ Camellia Plant Care
Christmas Carol™ Camellia needs full sun to part shade and well-draining soil. Use a rich, slightly acidic soil high in organic content to help the plant thrive and push out beautiful blooms. This hybrid has medium water needs, so water when the top couple of inches of soil are dry during the summer when the plant is actively growing. Cut back on water during the second growing season in the fall. Further reduce water after the plant stops blooming in the winter.
Fertilize the plant to promote new growth and healthy blooms. Feed the Camellia once or twice each year with an acidic fertilizer. This plant does not require much pruning but trim it back to remove dead or damaged growth in the spring. Camellia plants have temperature-sensitive roots, so place mulch around the base of the plant during the winter to help protect against chilly weather.
Christmas Carol™ Camellia Plant Spacing
A mature Christmas Carol™ Camellia will be 5 to 7 feet tall and 3 to 5 feet wide. Create a wall of greenery and blooms by placing the plants close together. This plant can be as close as 2.5 feet from center to center for a dense, seamless look. Space the plants further away if that more aligns with your desired look.
