Variety is the spice of life. ColorBlaze Royale Alligator Tears Coleus foliage keeps the garden, fresh and interesting all season long. With its crocodile green leaf margins and creamy yellow teardrop center, this coleus provides non stop colors. It does produce purple flowers, but the main focus is the abundant, bi-colored foliage. On average this coleus reaches 20 to 30 inches in height and exhibits an upright habit.
This coleus is deer resistant as well as heat tolerant. It is naive to the tropical climates of Southeast Asia and is related to the Lamiaceae family (like mint). Alligator Tears Coleus is a thriller when used in container culture. The yellow accentuates and compliments adjacent plants in combination plantings. Used in the landscape, Alligator Tears Coleus looks amazing as a backdrop when mass planted in a woodland edge garden bed.
ColorBlaze Royale Alligator Tears Coleus Care
Coleus thrives in sunny, hot humid conditions. This plant requires a minimum of 4 to 6 plus hours of sun. Soil should stay consistently moist and well-draining. When flowers emerge, pinch off the blooms. Pinching the blooms will help the plant divert energy to continue leaf production. In the active growing phase, add an annual application of compost or fertilizer in garden beds. In containers, fertilize regularly to keep leaf production growing strong.
Alligator Tears Coleus is a herbaceous perennial in zones 10-11, but an annual in zones 8 and below. Frost is detrimental to outdoor plants but there are a few options to overwinter it. If you have ever taken a cutting from mint, just cut a stem and add it to water. Once roots form, pot it up. If that is too much work, then just pot it up and bring it indoors. Check for any pest on and under leaves. Keep the humidity on the higher side and ensure it has adequate lighting. Congratulations! You have successfully overwintered a new houseplant! If all else fails and neither one of these ideas sound worthwhile, then just get a new one when spring rolls around.
ColorBlaze Royale Alligator Tears Coleus Spacing
When it comes to spacing, plant Alligator Tears Coleus 10 to 14 inches apart in either the landscape or container planting.
