Heat tolerant and not attractive to deer, this annual can be used in your full sun or full shade garden giving you many choices to add this gorgeous plant to your landscape.
Native to Indonesia and Southeast Asia and Australia, Zones 10a through 11b, there are no zones in the continental United States where this plant will survive outside year round, year after year. In its native environment this plant is a perennial woody shrub. Here in Zones 3-9 we rely on its beautiful medium growing foliage to brighten even the darkest corner of our gardens.
ColorBlaze Royale Apple Brandy Coleus Care
Easy to care for, with its preference for slightly acidic to neutral soil, pH 6.0 to 6.5, keep this annual evenly moist for best performance. Well draining, organic matter rich soil, and regular watering schedule, once a season fertilization for in ground plants and every two months for container plantings will keep this plant in great condition. Not generally attractive to pests or susceptible to powdery mildew, you will find this to be an easy maintenance annual.
This plant is primarily grown for its dramatic foliage, but it does produce flowers. ColorBlaze coleus are improved hybrids that delay flowering, so you will only have to deadhead or pinch when flowers appear in late season. Flowers are considered insignificant, and pinching back will keep the lush foliage in its best condition until first frost. Lifting the plants to bring indoors over winter before frost will give you year round color indoors, just be sure to treat for pests prior to bringing in, and give it a pebble tray or regular misting to optimize plant health.
ColorBlaze Royale Apple Brandy Coleus Spacing
A medium upright plant with height of 20 to 30 inches and spread of 12 to 16 inches, utilize this plant in the middle of your landscape or containers. Spacing 12 to 16 inches will allow it to spread out and fill in. Pair with caladiums, sweet potato vines, impatiens, sedums, calibrachoas, hostas and numerous grasses to provide a wonderful mix of colors and shapes in your cottage garden or patio containers.
