Feature
The Curry Plant combines beauty with function, sporting attractive bright yellow blooms with silvery, curry-scented leaves that deter both pests and deer. Midsummer brings domed clusters of small, lemon-yellow flowers that are great for dried flower arrangements, as they retain their color. This plant also has powerful tissue regenerative properties, aiding in the formation of scar tissue. Plus, it’s easy to care for, with low water and care needs. This is a great choice near walkways, entryways, and decks and patios, where its scent can be enjoyed.
Curry Plant Care
You can plant your Curry Plant outdoors a few weeks after spring’s last frost. This plant thrives in full sun, but is not picky about soil—opt for neutral to alkaline, well-draining soils.
Growing Curry Plant
This plant reaches up to 2 feet tall, spreading 3 feet wide. You can plant it anytime from spring through fall. Harvest the leaves periodically during the season. However, it’s best not to prune more than 50 percent of the foliage at any time.
This plant requires full sun and grows best outside. However, if you are growing the Curry Plant indoors, you’ll need to repot it every one or two years. Never allow the plant to be pot-bound. When repotting, make sure to trim dead and aged roots. Remove the old soil mix and add a slow-release fertilizer to fresh indoor potting soil. Water well and make sure the plant is placed near a sunny window.
Watering Curry Plant
As a drought-tolerant plant, this is the perfect choice for gardens that get infrequent to little watering. Watering once a week should suffice in the spring and cooler months. As temperatures rise, you may need to increase watering, especially for containers. Make sure the roots do not become submerged in water, as this can lead to root rot. Allow the soil to dry between waterings. After your plant reaches maturity, you can reduce watering.
Feeding Curry Plant
This plant does not need regular fertilization. Give your Curry Plant a slow-release feed in the spring. Do not fertilize the plant during the winter. This plant can become iron deficient, however, so you can add a teaspoon of iron sulfate to the soil once a month.
