Dalaya® Dahlias add color to your garden for months. The Yellow+Red Eye variety is a great addition to a sunny porch or patio where the smaller-sized flowers and intensely colored foliage can be appreciated in detail. The Dalaya® series offers the easiest dahlias to grow, requiring only regular fertilizing and watering to support an exceptionally long season of blooms.
The densely branching stems are resistant to powdery mildew. Deer and rabbits are rarely a problem for dahlias, and Dalaya® Yellow+Red Eye Dahlia is no exception. Dahlias sold primarily as annuals, such as the Dalaya® series, may perform as short-lived perennials in climates with mild winters. Grow Dalaya® to fill in for faded perennials in a garden bed, or use it as a thriller in a mixed seasonal planter with long-lasting impact.
Dalaya® Yellow+Red Eye Dahlia Care
Dahlias grow best in full sun and very loamy, fertile soil. Ensure that drainage is excellent to prevent the risk of root rot. Average garden soil with a neutral pH is fine for growing Dahlias in a garden bed. For containers, use an all-purpose potting mix with plenty of perlite or vermiculite added for both drainage and moisture retention.
Fertilize throughout the growing season with a diluted liquid fertilizer. Look for a product formulated for tomatoes or roses–those will have the proper ratio of NPK to support heavy blooming (1-3-2 NPK or similar).
Annual dahlias are low maintenance, only requiring deadheading as the flowers fade. Remove spent flowers regularly to encourage the plant to continue forming bud stems. Always follow the flower stem back to a set of leaves and make your cut just above where the leaf joins the stem.
Consistent watering is mandatory to keep dahlias blooming well. A 2-3 inch layer of compost or finely shredded arborist chips at the time of planting works to keep moisture in the soil longer while suppressing weed growth.
Dalaya® Yellow+Red Eye Dahlia Spacing
The smaller form of Dalaya Dahlias means less staking (if any) is necessary to keep flowers upright, even after heavy winds or rain. The mature height is typically 12-16 inches with a spread of 12 inches. Space plants in the garden 10-12 inches apart. Container-grown dahlias require a pot with at least an 8-inch diameter or one-gallon capacity when individually planted
