The award-winning Dalina Grande Romero Dahlia hybrid brings sunny yellow flowers and continuous blooming to summer gardens. The bright flowers attract butterflies but deer are not attracted to the plants. Be ready for steady blooming all summer with nothing but plenty of sun, average watering, and deadheading as needed. Or cut some of the yellow flowers for indoor arrangements.
Plant several Dalina Grande Romeros, which grow to a height of 15 to 18 inches, in a garden bed before taller plants. Or use the annuals as fillers in a garden container. The effect is bright yellow, showy flowers that grow on stalks just above rich green leaves. Although dahlias are annuals, they grow from tubers so you can overwinter them if you are willing to dig up the tubers right after the first frost and replant them in spring.
Dalina Grande Romero Dahlia Care
Dahlias like Dalina Grande Romero grow best in full sun, or a minimum of 6 hours of sunlight a day. In the warmest southern regions, they benefit from a little shade from intense afternoon sun. Plant your dahlia after the ground has warmed to about 60 degrees and there is no danger of frost. They prefer well-draining soil with a balanced pH. Water them after planting or when the replanted tubers show growth above the ground, and give them average but regular water in summer. Add some fertilizer within the first 30 days of planting, choosing one that is low in nitrogen. After that, occasional side dressing of dahlias with fertilizer, no more often than once a month, keeps them happy until the first frost.
Deadhead faded flowers as needed for best blooming. Dahlias are tender annuals that can’t overwinter in the ground in most U.S. climates. But you can make your Dalina Grande Romero a perennial plant by digging up and properly storing the tubers, then replanting them in spring. Container-grown dahlias also can winter over indoors. Dig up the tubers after a frost kills the top of the plant and you’ve cut off the stems. Wash away soil and let the tubers dry before storing them in peat moss or newspaper in a dark, cool spot like a garage; don’t let them freeze.
Dalina Grande Romero Dahlia Spacing
In the landscape, plant your dahlias about 12 to 18 inches apart to allow room for mature growth. You can pack them a little more tightly in a container. When using them as container fillers, remember they eventually reach nearly 18 inches high.
