Rosa Desdemona® is an English shrub rose known for its large, showy flowers and strong, fragrant aroma. It is a popular choice for gardens and landscapes and can also be grown in containers. One of the standout features of Rosa Desdemona® is its soft peach flowers. These blooms have a classic, full-petaled form with a petal count of 52. The flowers are produced singly or in small clusters set off by dark green foliage that contrasts nicely with the pastel petals.
In addition to its beautiful flowers, Rosa Desdemona® is prized for its strong, sweet fragrance. The aroma of these roses is often described as fruity, with hints of citrus and almond. It is particularly pronounced in the evening, making Rosa Desdemona® a popular choice for use in moon gardens or other nighttime plantings. It has an upright, arching, bushy growth habit, and typically reaches a height of 3-4 feet, with a similar spread. It is not an evergreen plant, but it does produce new foliage in the spring after winter dormancy. Rosa Desdemona® is generally considered a disease-resistant plant but it can be susceptible to common rose problems such as black spot and powdery mildew. Proper care, including watering and fertilization, can help prevent these issues.
Desdemona Rose Care
When caring for Rosa Desdemona®, there are a few key things to remember. First and foremost, this plant requires plenty of sunlight to thrive. It prefers full sun, with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. This rose grows best in well-draining soil rich in organic matter with a neutral to slightly acidic pH and benefits from a topdressing of compost or well-rotted manure around the root zone. Watering is also important – keep the soil evenly moist, but avoid overwatering as this can lead to root rot. Fertilize every 4-6 weeks during the growing season with a fertilizer formulated for roses.
Pruning is also an essential part of caring for Rosa Desdemona®. Prune the plant in the late winter or early spring, removing any dead or damaged branches. Remove up to half of the height of the canes, cutting just above a growth node.
Desdemona Rose Spacing
When planting Rosa Desdemona®, space plants about 3-4 feet apart to give them room to grow and spread. When growing Desdemona® in a container, select a pot that is several inches wider than the rootball to give the plant room to grow.
