Native Achillea millefolium makes an interesting and long-blooming addition to a pollinator garden. Desert Eve™ Rose Yarrow (Achillea millefolium ‘Desderos’) features large umbels of deep rosy red flowers highlighted by golden yellow stamens. This is one plant that can take heat, wind, and dryness while remaining fresh and vibrant with almost no upkeep or extra maintenance.
Yarrow is great for those hard-to-plant spots in the garden that are extra sunny or have poor soil. Allow Yarrow to spread and fill empty spaces as a low-maintenance ground cover, or use it as an accent for a mixed seasonal container. Desert Eve™ Yarrow has incredible disease and pest resistance. Neither deer nor rabbits tend to bother this herb. Slugs and snails may take advantage of fresh shoots in the early spring, although they are rarely a problem once the plant has reached full height.
Desert Eve™ Rose Yarrow Care
Choose a location in the garden with full sun (at least 6 hours, but preferably more), and well-draining, average soil. Very rich soils may encourage foliage growth over flowers and should be avoided. Heavy fertilizing should also be avoided. Mulch lightly to suppress weeds, pulling the material away from the base of the plant. Water newly planted yarrow every 3-5 days until the plants are established and visibly putting on more top growth. When the plants mature, supplemental watering is generally only required during extended periods of drought.
Pinching is not required for Desert Eve™ Yarrow plants. They naturally develop dense branching, with sturdy upright stems. Cut back spent growth late in the fall or early in the spring as new growth emerges. Divide clumps of yarrow every 3-4 years or as needed to encourage vigorous growth. Transplanted yarrow clumps will need a season or two to fully establish and become as drought tolerant as the parent plant.
Desert Eve™ Rose Yarrow Spacing
The overall height and spread for Desert Eve™ Rose Yarrow is a compact 14-18 inches, making it easy to fit into small gardens. Space plants 12 inches apart, center on center, for a dense ground cover effect. Container-grown yarrow needs at least an 8-inch diameter for a single plant.
