There is no greater pleasure than being able to walk into your garden and harvest a beautiful head of broccoli to take to your kitchen and use it to create a healthy, delicious meal for your family. Whether you use broccoli raw in salads, or with a ranch dip; or saute’ it in a stir fry; or simply steam it with a light sprinkle of parmesan cheese on top, broccoli brings a flavor and crunch to your table like no other vegetable can.
Broccoli is packed with vitamins, the most prominent being Vitamin A and C. They bring a bunch of fiber to your table, a medium size head of broccoli can contain up to 15 grams of fiber, about half of the recommended daily allowance for adults. This makes broccoli a powerhouse of nutrition in one tasty package! Growing broccoli this spring is easy, full sun, lots of water, keep weeds to a minimum and keep after any little critters that want to have a share of your garden.
Destiny Broccoli Plant Care
Bright green rounded heads, on the small to medium size will be ready to harvest in mid summer when planted either direct sow 2 to 3 weeks before the last frost in your area, or by transplanting the plants that you started 5 to 6 weeks earlier indoors 2 to 3 weeks before your last frost in your area. This broccoli is heat resistant, making it a great candidate for being planted again in mid summer for a fall harvest. It is slow to bolt, giving you a lot more latitude for summer heat. It likes to be planted in full sun. No shade for these guys! Plant your seeds or finished plants 24 to 30 inches apart in rows that are 12 to 14 inches apart. Mulch to control weeds and to keep the soil cool.
Watch for cabbage worms and aphids, and use an appropriate control when these pests are noted. Cabbage worms can simply be picked off, and the aphids can be blasted off with a water hose, or use an insecticidal soap if they prove to be unrelenting.
Growing Destiny Broccoli Plants
If you lack garden space, consider planting broccoli in a container or a raised bed on your patio or deck. Even a small balcony of an apartment building will work, as long as it has access to at least 6 hours of sunlight per day. Make sure soil is deep, at least 24 inches of good quality garden soil with well rotted compost material worked in and a balanced fertilizer like a 10-10-10 applied when you are setting out plants. Seeds should be fertilized after the first set of true leaves appears once they have sprouted.
It takes 70 to 75 days from planting of seeds to maturity, so plan according to your date of last frost and time your second planting in midsummer when you have at least 2 ½ months of good weather to work with.

It is important to keep broccoli evenly watered as it cannot tolerate drying out, nor being in soggy soil.
Feeding Destiny Broccoli Plants
Three weeks after you have set your plants out, fertilize them every other week with a balanced NPK fertilizer, watering it in deeply after application. This will help to boost the growth cycle.
