Shade loving plants that also have a long blooming period are not always easy to fund. Deutschland Astilbe is the plant that you need to give a pop of brightness in the shadiest of gardens.Deutschland has the winning mixture of dark, fern like foliage, dramatic creamy white flower blooms and lasts from early summer all the way until a hard freeze. Deer resistance is very high.
Hummingbirds, butterflies and native bees are all drawn to its constant supply of nectar. These blooms just don’t stop coming. The plumes of flowers are long lasting as cut flowers and make lovely dried arrangements. Astilbe works well when planted with other shade loving plants such as Hosta, Bleeding Heart and Hellebores. Adding to the foliage textures of a well planned woodland or stream side design.
Deutschland Astilbe Care
Astilbe will tolerate a wide range of soil pH, but really thrive in slightly acidic soil of around 6.0. A well drained, but moist soil is essential. Extra irrigation will be needed during extended periods of drought or heat. The only soil Astilbe will not like is a very heavy clay that stays wet. Fertilizing is needed once early in the spring as new growth emerges.
After the first flush of blooms early in the summer, the plants can be cut back by half their height. This will encourage more leaf and bloom stems for another flush late in the summer. Astilbes perform best if they are not cut back before winter. The old growth acts as a natural mulch to protect the crown from heavy snow or cold temperatures. Clearing away of the old stems can be done once new growth starts in the early spring.
Deutschland Astilbe Spacing
Deutschland has a medium sized growth habit for Astilbes. Height of 20 -24 inches and a width of 18-24 inches. Planted in large groups, this plant is dramatic and impactful. Spacing is recommended at 20 inches on center.
