A great shrub that offers two very distinct pops of color is the Double Play Red Spirea, a landscaping favorite that’s an excellent addition for nearly any design. Although “double play” refers to the shrub’s spring and summer hues, this plant will bring about butterflies and hummingbirds, lending itself as a true landscaping performer! Happen to live in a densely-populated area where air quality is an issue? No problem, as this shrub has proven tolerant of urban pollution.
The Double Play Red Spirea’s size isn’t overly large, usually reaching 2’-3’ tall with a 2’-3’ span. Bloom season is a little later than some shrubs, with burgundy flowers sprouting in the late spring, then transitioning towards a deep crimson color as the months pass into the summer. For best use, opt for using this shrub in borders, containers, mass plantings, in firescaping, or even in a wildlife garden.
Double Play Red Spirea Care
Soil quality needs to be average at minimum, and the Double Play Red Spirea needs a well-drained area to establish proper roots. It’ll also need at least partial sun, but plant in full sun if possible. Regular watering is recommended, with additional moisture sometimes being required in hotter areas, but be careful not to overwater. To achieve the best aesthetic possible, remove spent blooms and prune in the summer after flowering. Fertilizing is simple, as a general purpose treatment is all that’s necessary in the spring.
Double Play Red Spirea Spacing
Allow for 2’-3’ between each Double Play Red Spirea, but if several are being used in a border or firescaping, cut spacing down to 1’-2’ between plants.
