Peonies are known for full, lush flowers, and the Duchesse de Nemours Peony does not disappoint. The sweet-smelling double blooms have feathery pure white petals with hints of cream near the center. The flowers bloom in early June and create a very impressive display when the 30-inch tall and wide shrub is covered in show-stopping blooms. The flowers are offset by deep green foliage with smooth edges and pronounced veining.
Use this sumptuous peony in beds, mass plantings, foundation plantings as a focal point, or cut flowers. The Duchesse de Nemours Peony is a herbaceous peony that is deer-resistant. Once the showy flowers fade away, this plant will continue to display lush greenery through the end of the growing season. Grow this beauty as a perennial in USDA zones 3 through 8. The plant may need a year or two to settle in before it blooms.
Duchesse de Nemours Peony Care
Plant in full sun, but select a spot that receives afternoon shade when grown in Southern climates. Apply one inch of water weekly during the growing season. Peonies prefer rich, organic soil with excellent drainage. Fertilizing is unnecessary, but top dress the soil with organic compost or manure in the spring to support healthy growth.
Established plants may benefit from being staked, so the full flowers stay upright. The growth will naturally die back when the weather turns cold, but cut and remove the growth to reduce the risk of pets or disease.
Duchesse de Nemours Peony Spacing
Peonies can experience fungal problems when grown in very damp conditions, so space 32 inches apart ensures air can circulate around the shrub. The Duchesse de Nemours Peony will grow 24 to 30 inches tall and spread out 24 to 30 inches.
