Dwarf Firepower Nandina is all about foliage color in a compact, easy-to-place shrub. Nandina domestica 'Fire Power' grows about 2 to 3 feet tall and wide, with lime-green spring and summer foliage that shifts to red-orange and crimson as temperatures cool. Its rounded form stays naturally neat, making it a good fit for borders, low hedges, containers, and mass plantings. Our landscape designer often uses it in front of taller evergreens where the winter color can carry the bed after flowers are gone.
This dwarf heavenly bamboo is grown for leaves rather than bloom, since it produces few to no flowers or berries. That fruitless habit gives it a much lower reseeding concern than older nandina types, although all parts of the plant should still be kept away from pets and children who may chew foliage or stems. Dwarf Firepower Nandina is evergreen to semi-evergreen depending on winter temperatures, and the foliage often holds its strongest red color through the cold season. It is deer resistant, drought tolerant once established, and well suited to small-space foundations, traffic islands, rock gardens, poolside beds, and patio containers.
Dwarf Firepower Nandina Care
Plant Dwarf Firepower Nandina in full sun to part shade, with more sun producing stronger fall and winter color. It adapts to clay, loam, sand, and average garden soil when drainage is good. Acidic to neutral soil is preferred, though it can tolerate a wider pH range if chlorosis does not appear.
Water deeply at planting, then water twice weekly during the first few months while roots establish. Established plants tolerate dry periods, but summer irrigation during long heat spells helps maintain fuller foliage. Fertilize in early spring with a balanced slow-release shrub fertilizer or an acid-forming fertilizer if soil runs alkaline. Mulch 2 inches deep to cool the root zone and reduce weeds, keeping mulch off the stems.
Dwarf Firepower Nandina usually looks best when allowed to keep its rounded shape. Prune only to remove brown leaves, dead stems, or stray canes, making cuts near the base rather than shearing the top. Container plants in colder Zone 6 gardens benefit from a sheltered winter position near a wall or unheated garage during sharp freezes.
Dwarf Firepower Nandina Spacing
Space Dwarf Firepower Nandina about 2 feet apart for a low hedge or continuous color band. Use 3 feet apart for individual mounds with open soil between plants. For containers, choose a pot at least 14 inches wide with drainage holes, and water when the top 2 inches of soil are dry.
For a sunny color bed, set Dwarf Firepower Nandina ahead of loropetalum or abelias, then repeat daylilies nearby for summer flowers before the nandina’s cool-season color takes over. Juniper bushes make a durable evergreen ground layer in drier spots with excellent drainage. In containers, let Dwarf Firepower Nandina serve as the permanent shrub and change the seasonal edge with calibrachoa in sun or coral bells in part shade.
