The large, double-bloom flowers of the Early Wonder® Camellia may stop you in your tracks. The rosy-pink flowers are absolutely stunning and are contrasted by dark green foliage with subtly serrated edges and a leathery texture. This upright plant, also known as Camellia japonica 'Early Autumn,' offers year-round appeal. It starts to bloom in the fall, with flowers lasting throughout the winter and into the spring in mild climates.
Use the Early Wonder® Camellia as a mass planting or hedge to make a bold statement or let the striking beauty shine through by using this plant as an accent or a specimen planting. This tree-like shrub can grow rather large and reach heights of 6 to 8 feet, so plant it in an area that can accommodate a large plant and ensure it will not block light or interfere with other nearby plants. This flowering beauty is a perennial in USDA zones 7 through 9.
Early Wonder® Camellia Plant Care
This plant needs at least 3 to 4 hours of direct sunlight to thrive, so select a spot that receives full sun to part shade. Plant in a well-draining, slightly acidic soil. Amend the soil with organic material like compost to help give the plant an extra boost of nutrition. The Early Wonder® Camellia has medium water needs, and let the top few inches of the soil completely dry out before giving the plant water when it is blooming.
Fertilize in the spring using a slow-release acidic plant food or an organic acidic plant fertilizer. This plant generally maintains a neat appearance but trim back any overgrowth or damaged sections in the spring.
Early Wonder® Camellia Plant Spacing
If using Early Wonder® Camellia to create a hedge or a wall of greenery, space plants as close as 3 feet apart. Plants can be spaced further apart if that fits your landscape and the look you want to achieve. Mature Early Wonder® Camellia will be 6 to 8 feet tall and 4 to 6 feet wide.
