Growing Zones
The Eastern White Pine or Pinus strobus is a majestic evergreen. The conifer has long, soft blue-green needles that grow in bundles of five. After the tree is a few years old, it will produce cylindrical cones that can reach 6 inches long. Cone production will peak every 3 to 5 years. This is a low-maintenance tree that can grow very large.
The Eastern White Pine is native to North America, so it requires very little attention or care once this plant has settled in. This tree is a perennial in USDA zones 3 through 8. Eastern White Pine is commonly used in borders or barriers or specimen planting. The tall frame creates an ideal habitat for birds and other small animals, while the cones and seeds are a food source.
Eastern White Pine Care
Use moist, well-drained soil that has an acidic pH. Eastern White Pine trees require at least 4 hours of sunlight. This tree can handle increased amounts of light, but the conifer will do better with more shade in warmer climates. Young trees require about one inch of water per week. Established trees can comfortably live in drier conditions.
Avoid planting this tree in areas with high salt, which can slow growth. Remove dead or damaged branches as needed. As the tree grows, remove the bottom-most branches. As native plants, Eastern White Pines do not require fertilizer, but applying a slow-release plant food in the spring can support new growth.
Eastern White Pine Spacing
This fast-growing tree can become a behemoth at 50 to 80 feet tall and 20 to 40 feet wide. Space this tree at least 10 feet away from other trees and 15 to 20 feet away from structures, like a house.
