If you are looking for some evergreen interest that doesn’t grow too big, the Emerald Squeeze™ Arborvitae may fit the bill perfectly. Botanically named Thuja occidentalis Emerald Squeeze™, this slow-growing conifer is excellent for adding texture and structure, especially during the colder months. Producing a pleasing conical form up to a maximum 8 feet tall over time, the Emerald Squeeze™ Arborvitae is ideally suited to many garden uses.

As a member of the eastern white cedar family, this Thuja is native to North America and suitable for growing in zones 4-8. It requires regular watering until established, after which it requires little maintenance. Commonly used due to its small form, Emerald Squeeze™ Arborvitae is ideal for planting in a uniform row to draw the eye along, or can be planted individually in a mixed border.

Emerald Squeeze™ Arborvitae Care

The Emerald Squeeze™ Arborvitae is happiest when grown in moist, well-drained soil in full sun. It can tolerate most soil types as long as they are not overly acidic or alkaline. After planting, regular watering for the first couple of years is required to help it establish. Thereafter, watering is usually only necessary during prolonged periods of hot and dry weather. If grown in fertile soil, feeding an Emerald Squeeze™ Arborvitae is not strictly necessary. However, a slow-release, general shrub fertilizer can be applied in early spring if desired.

As a low-maintenance shrub, Emerald Squeeze™ Arborvitae does not require a lot of pruning. That being said, it can be lightly trimmed in late spring or early fall to tidy it up and keep it looking good.

Emerald Squeeze™ Arborvitae Spacing

Reaching an eventual 8 feet tall by 4 feet wide, Emerald Squeeze™ Arborvitae remains remarkably compact. If planting a row of them, space them approximately 3.5-4 feet apart, and the shrubs will eventually fill in the gaps.
