Cardinal Crest Coneflower, botanically known as Echinacea Eye-Catcher™️ ‘Cardinal Crest’, features a double layer of striking red petals that make a beautiful impact from mid-summer well into the fall, particularly when planted in mass drifts for amazing color. Cardinal Crest Coneflower has a compact form with dark green foliage and excellent branching and flower production.
High performing and low maintenance, Cardinal Crest Coneflower is grown in Hardiness Zones 4-8, reaching heights of 20 inches with a spread of 16-18 inches. It is deer resistant, and birds love to eat the dried seed heads as a nutritious snack in the fall.
Eye-Catcher™ Cardinal Crest Coneflower Care
Plant this easy-care, abundantly flowering Coneflower in a full-sun location; select an area where it will receive at least 6-8 hours of full sun daily. Cardinal Crest Coneflowers perform best when planted in well-draining soil amended with plenty of organic matter such as garden compost. Water each plant deeply, about once a week or more often in the heat of the summer during their first year. Once established, allow the top layer of soil to dry out slightly between waterings. Fertilize with an organic bloom-boosting formula throughout the season to promote flowering.
Deadheading or removing spent flowers will promote continual blooming and help prevent self-seeding. On the flip side, you can sprinkle the dried seed heads around the existing plant base to encourage a fuller perennial in future seasons. Apply a 2-inch layer of natural mulch around the root base of the plant to protect it from harsh winter weather. The dried seedheads can be left on the plant to be enjoyed by the birds and to provide winter interest. Cut coneflower foliage back to a few inches from soil level in early spring to allow fresh new growth to emerge.
Eye-Catcher™ Cardinal Crest Coneflower Spacing
Plant Cardinal Crest Coneflower in mixed borders, cutting gardens, in containers, or in groupings to make a big impact. Space plants 16” apart or more on center when planting in groups, allowing for adequate air circulation between plants.
