Every annual garden can use some Fairy Dust. Delicate pink to lavender to rose colored petals whirl out from dark pink throats in semi-fan shape, dangling sweetly above their green foliage. The species cuphea range from low growing annuals to semi-woody shrubby perennials, capable of growing up to 7 feet tall in their native environment. Most regions, however, use cuphea as an annual, sprinkling its magic in annual and perennial gardens across the United States.
Native to warm, tropical regions of the United States and the Americas, cupheas grow year round in Zones 8b through 11b. They can be grown in 8a with winter protection in some areas. Zones 3-7 can grow cupheas as annuals, especially in areas with warm humid summers. Sometimes called cigar flowers, bat flowers or mouse ears, cupheas are a much loved addition to spring into fall gardens.
Fairy Dust Pink Cuphea Care
A carefree annual for the most part, cupheas require moderately moist soil, are heat and drought tolerant once established, and prefer a slightly acidic to neutral soil, pH 6.0 to 6.5. Long sun-filled days are perfect for providing continuous, long-lasting blooms. Fertilize regularly throughout the season for plants in the ground, and for container plants. Keep soil consistently moist and do not let completely dry out as this will cause leaf burn and unsightly dry foliage.
Deadheading is not necessary with cupheas. Lightly prune if the plant starts to look leggy, gets out of shape, or dries out and it will bounce back with vigorous growth and renewed flowering High light, and part to full sun is needed for long bloom periods. All in all, an easy to grow annual.
Fairy Dust Pink Cuphea Spacing
Fairy Dust Pink Cupheas are not too fussy about spacing as it is an open plant that gets good air circulation naturally. Growing up to 10 to 16 inches tall and 12 to 18 inches wide, space plantings about 8 to 12 inches apart. As a medium height mounding annual, cupheas pair beautifully with calibrachoa, hedera, lobelia, petunia, ipomoea, scaevola, isotoma, verbena, and pennistemon weeping grasses, just to name a few, and make an attractive, frilly accent in large container gardens.
