Adding brilliant color to borders, beds, foundation plantings, hedges, and containers, Fire N Ice Pieris features lustrous foliage, fading from fiery red to emerald green etched with ivory. Otherwise known as Pieris japonica, Fire N Ice blooms in spring with massive clusters of perfumed ivory florets. This low-maintenance, variegated evergreen makes an ideal shade-tolerant addition to woodland gardens.
Fire N Ice Pieris grows upright and bushy, reaching 5 to 6 feet tall and wide. Cold hardy in zones 5-9, it’s a vigorous evergreen native to Asia. This shrub is also deer, disease, and pest resistant.
Fire N Ice Pieris Care
Choose a spot protected from high winds in partial sun to partial shade. Fire N Ice Pieris thrives in morning sun followed by afternoon shade. Morning sun will encourage brighter variegation and more blooming, while afternoon shade will prevent its leaves from sunburning. Plant this shrub in moist, slightly acidic, well-draining soil. To improve drainage and prevent fungal disease, amend poor soil with compost. Water a couple times per week, providing about one inch of water, to encourage healthy root development. Apply a 2-3 inch ring of mulch to prevent water loss due to evaporation. After flowering has concluded, apply a fertilizer suited for acid-loving plants.
Since its organic shape is typically pleasing, pruning is not required frequently. However, to control the size, trim in early spring. Remove dead, damaged, diseased or crossed branches as they appear. Also, deadhead spent flowers to maintain a tidy appearance.
Fire N Ice Pieris thrives in containers. Plant it as a specimen or “thriller” in a thriller-filler-spiller combination. Choose a container at least 15 inches wide and fill it with an average potting mix suitable for acid-loving plants. Plants growing in containers require watering and fertilizing more frequently than those grown in the ground. As a result, water Fire N Ice Pieris deeply at least twice per week, and apply a liquid fertilizer suited for acid-loving plants monthly.
Fire N Ice Pieris Spacing
Space each shrub 5 to 6 feet apart from one center to the next. However, when creating a hedge, space plants 4 to 5 feet apart for a dense appearance.
