Barbie wants her dress back! Dark Eyes Trailing Fuchsia has that exotic and eye-catching beauty. The green foliage cascades down into a beautiful color scheme of pink and purple delight. The flowers mimic a festive ballroom gown suspended in the air. This trailing fuchsia is medium in height at 4 to 8 inches. It has a spread of 18 to 24 inches. Expect blooms all spring and summer long and it will flourish from planting to frost.
Native to Central and South America, Fuchsia is found throughout the Andes Mountains. This plant thrives in low light, cool and moist environments. Birds and butterflies are even attracted to its bright display of color. This plant looks marvelous in window boxes and hanging baskets. Typically, Dark Eyes Fuchsia is used as a spiller in container planting.
Fuchsia Dark Eyes Care
Requiring only 4 to 6 hours of sunlight daily, Fuchsia triumphs in shade to part shade. Quite easy to maintain, Dark Eyes can be trimmed back when flowers are spent to increase the bloom. Deadheading is not necessary though. It can adapt to a wide range of soil types. As long as the soil is moist and well-draining, fuchsia will thrive. Fertilize regularly and taper off towards fall.
Dark Eyes Fuchsia is an annual when planted outdoors from zones 8 and below. It is hardy in zones 9 to 11. Fuchsia is tricky to overwinter, but it can be done. It requires higher humidity. Typically indoor climate has dry heat and low humidity. Make sure this plant is in front of a window that gets at least 6 hours of daylight. Cut back any stems or berries. Be vigilant and treat for any infestation of spider mites, since it is prone to this pest especially when indoors.
Fuchsia Dark Eyes Spacing
Allow 18 to 24 inch spacing between plants when planting in either a container or landscape. Plant in at least a 12 in pot. Generally, a 12 to 14 inch hanging basket looks fantastic.
