Gold Dust Mecardonia is a hybrid of a low growing perennial M. procumbens and it is the earliest of the Mecardonia hybrids to flower. Perennial in the Southern coastal regions of the United States, it is an early season annual for Midwest and Northern gardens. Its attractive bright yellow flowers that blanket the bright green foliage are reminiscent of nemesia and it belongs to the same plant family.
Native to Southwest United States, Mexico, Central American and into the western region of South American, it is a perennial in Zones 10a through 11b. Zones 2-9 can enjoy it as a long season bloomer from May until October in most climates. Primarily used in containers and hanging baskets, it also makes an excellent ground cover when massed out in your landscape. It enjoys full sun exposure and flowers best in the high light this brings.
GoldDust® Mecardonia Care
An easy care annual, Gold Dust requires little intervention from you once established. A moderately moist soil with an average pH of 5.8 to 6.2 is all it requires other than watering when it gets dry and a light fertilizer once a season if planted in your landscape or every other watering if in a container. It is heat tolerant but appreciative of some light shade in extremely hot conditions. It is also drought tolerant. Insects rarely bother this beautiful annual.
Deadheading is not needed as this plant self cleans its spent blooms. It is a cascading, trailing plant so pruning is rarely needed. Shear back with sharp scissors if you want to keep it in shape. With its low growing, mounding habit, it provides a wonderful foundation for large containers and massed out in your landscape. Plant it on the edge of your containers for an attractive spilling display.
GoldDust® Mecardonia Spacing
Spacing is crucial as this annual tops out at just 5 inches but spreads up to 20 inches. Where its stems touch the ground it sets out roots, so this will creep when planted in your landscape, creating a massive yet low mounding display. Plant it in the foreground, giving it 12 to 16 inches of space between plants and pair it with medium and tall plants for your cottage garden, borders or edgings.
