The shade-loving Golden Feathers Jacob's Ladder features lovely, bluish-purple flowers that grow in loose clusters. The fragrant flowers bloom from spring through summer. While the flowers are stunning, the variegated foliage adds long-lived color and visual interest. The oval-shaped leaves of the Polemonium pulcherrimum are both sunny yellow and medium green. The leaves are evenly spaced along thin stems.

This beauty is at home in beds, borders, and containers. The foliage stands out against the hardscape of a rock garden and adds greenery to a shady corner of a landscape. This plant is small and only reaches about one foot tall, so feature it near the front of a bed or mass planting, where the flowers and foliage can be admired. Tucking it among taller perennials or pairing with hostas can highlight its unique variegation. Butterflies are drawn to the flowers for added benefit.

Golden Feathers Jacob's Ladder Care

Plant the Golden Feathers Jacob's Ladder in full to partial shade in fertile, well-drained soil. Water this plant regularly during the growing season when the top few inches of soil are dry. Fertilize the Golden Feathers Jacob's Ladder monthly during the growing season, using balanced plant food.

Trim Jacob’s Ladder back after blooming to encourage another flush of flowers. Pruning the plant will also prevent the stems from becoming leggy. Container-grown plants benefit from consistent moisture and a high-quality potting mix enriched with organic matter. Move potted Jacob’s Ladder to a sheltered area in winter if you experience severe cold, though the plant typically survives down to zone 5. Leave the basal leaves intact until spring to help protect the crown and ensure healthy reemergence.

Golden Feathers Jacob's Ladder Spacing

The Golden Feathers Jacob's Ladder has a mounded, upright growth habit. Plants reach 10 to 13 inches tall and 12 to 14 inches wide. Space plants 12 inches apart to create a dense mass of foliage. For container displays, use a pot at least 8 to 10 inches wide to provide ample room for root growth.
