Adding homegrown Tomatillos to your cooking will punch up the flavor of any dish. Grande Rio Verde Tomatillo produces the biggest fruit of any variety and grows as easily as Tomatoes or Herbs in your kitchen garden. Each fruit develops into a dense, 3-4 ounce globe of pale green. Tomatillos are not only essential for making Salsa verde, but they give a distinctly sour taste to curries and creamy sauces. Grande Rio Verde Tomatillos are indeterminate plants with a large harvest of fruit late in the summer. Fruits are typically ready to harvest at 85 days from transplanting.
Grande Rio Verde Tomatillo Care
Plant Tomatillos in a sunny location with well-draining soil. Average soil texture and a neutral pH are suitable. Tomatillos can be treated like Tomatoes and will need protection if planted outside when nighttime temperatures are below 50 degrees F. Regular watering and fertilizing help the plants produce large fruit. Stop fertilizing when the fruit is developing.
Growing Grande Rio Verde Tomatillo
Tomatillo is a vigorous grower and needs to be staked or caged for support while the plants are still small. Tomato cages or trellising is perfect. Make sure to tie new growth into a trellis regularly. Tomatillos can tolerate some shade during the day; shade early in the morning or late in the afternoon shade is acceptable. During scorching weather, Tomatillos may slow down the production of fruit. Prolonged temperatures over 95 degrees F will delay a harvest until the temperatures cool in late summer.
Tomatillo plants are large but can be successfully grown in very large containers. 5-gallon or larger pots are perfect for Tomatillos. Fill the container with a soil-based potting mix with perlite added for drainage. Water plants regularly when the top 1-2 inches of soil are dry. Fertilize every two weeks with diluted fish emulsion until the fruits begin to develop.
Watering Grande Rio Verde Tomatillo
Tomatillos require 1 inch of water a week and benefit from mulch around the root zone. Drip irrigation and soaker hoses will efficiently water the roots and will reduce excess evaporation and wetting of the foliage.
Feeding Grande Rio Verde Tomatillo
Use a liquid fertilizer for Tomatoes or an organic seaweed emulsion. Apply once every two weeks while plants are blooming. Stop fertilizing as the fruit begins to set.
