The Green Tea Camellia shrub is lovely and functional. This leafy plant makes a stunning hedge that blooms from summer through winter. Fragrant white flowers measure 1.5 inches wide and are offset by 5-inch-long, glossy green leaves with serrated edges.

Different parts of the Camellia sinensis can be picked and used to make tea. Harvest new leaves and leaf buds in early spring to make green tea. Large mature leaves can be dried to make oolong or black tea. Use the flower buds to brew white tea. Grow Green Tea Camellia in zones 7 through 9.

Green Tea Camellia Care

Plant Green Tea Camellia in the spring or fall. This shrub needs partial sun. Select a planting site that does not receive harsh afternoon sun. Provide rich, acidic soil that is moist and well drained. Leave 6 to 10 feet between shrubs to create a dense planting. Plant in an area protected from harsh winds, especially during the winter.

Growing Green Tea Camellia

These shrubs are generally easy to maintain. Green Tea Camellia shrubs are slow-growing but stand 10 to 15 feet tall and 6 to 10 feet wide at maturity.  They have an excellent natural shape, but prune as needed after flowering. Remove dead or damaged branches at any time.

Green Tea Camellia plants grow well in containers and can be placed on a balcony or deck. Containers make it possible to grow Green Tea Camellia in a wide range of climates because the plant can be moved to a protected area in the winter. Use a container at least 18 inches wide for Green Tea Camellia.

Watering Green Tea Camellia

Green Tea Camellia shrubs prefer consistent moisture, so keep the soil damp but never soggy. Apply a layer of mulch to retain moisture and reduce weeds.

Feeding Green Tea Camellia

Routine feeding keeps the plant healthy and increases leaf production for harvesting. In mid-spring and early summer, apply a balanced fertilizer.
