Part of the Boulevard collection, the Guiding Promise Clematis brings the wow factor when its 5-inch purple flowers are on show. As a compact clematis, Guiding Promise grows to a maximum of five feet high, which makes it perfect for a large container or where space is at a premium. As a group 3 clematis, Guiding Promise flowers in early summer only to rebloom late in the season. It is hardy in USDA zones 4 through 9.
The Guiding Promise Clematis is easy to grow and care for. However, it will require a support or trellis to grow upon for its blooms to be fully appreciated. Bred for its compact, yet bushy growth, this clematis is perfect for adding some height and color to your garden or patio.
Guiding Promise Clematis Plant Care
The Guiding Promise Clematis likes to be planted where its foliage and flowers receive full sun or light shade and its roots are hidden from the heat of the sun. It prefers fertile soil that is free draining but kept moist. Fertilize it with a slow-release, potassium-rich feed in early spring. Frequent watering is required, especially after planting and when grown in a container.
As a group 3 clematis, Guiding Promise only requires a yearly prune in the fall when it can be cut back to around 12 inches high. When pruning a clematis, you can make a cut just above a pair of buds using a pair of sanitized and sharp pruners. Mulching in early spring will not only help conserve moisture over the warmer months but will also help suppress any potential weeds as well.
Guiding Promise Clematis Spacing
When mature, the Guiding Promise Clematis can reach an eventual height of 3 to 5 feet and a spread of 2 to 3 feet. New growth can be tied onto the supporting structure as it develops.
