Hardy Daisy Gardenia has the intoxicating scent gardenias are known for in a cold-tolerant package. The single, white, daisy-shaped blooms have small buttery yellow centers, opening over glossy dark green evergreen foliage. The flowers bloom from late spring into summer, with later flowers possible in warm climates or containers. Gardenia jasminoides 'Daisy' grows into a dense, bushy shrub about 3 to 4 feet tall and wide. We find its simple flower form especially charming near patios, where the fragrance can be easily enjoyed.
This selection is valued for better cold tolerance than many gardenias, with listed hardiness into Zone 7 in protected sites. Hardy Daisy Gardenia has a compact, mounding to upright habit that suits foundation beds, fragrant hedges, small-space accents, and containers. The flowers are good for cutting, and the evergreen foliage keeps the planting attractive after bloom. Site it near outdoor seating, windows, walkways, or entry gardens so the evening fragrance can be enjoyed at close range.
Hardy Daisy Gardenia Care
Plant Hardy Daisy Gardenia in full sun to light shade, using morning sun with afternoon shade in hot climates. In cooler parts of its range, a brighter site helps support heavier flowering. Grow it in rich, moist, well-drained acidic soil with a pH preferably between 4.5 to 6.0.
Water weekly during the first year, increasing to twice weekly during hot, dry weather. Once established, Hardy Daisy Gardenia needs less frequent irrigation, but long dry periods can reduce flowering and stress the glossy foliage. Fertilize in spring with a slow-release fertilizer for acid-loving plants, and mulch with pine bark or pine straw to protect shallow roots and help maintain soil moisture. In colder Zone 7 sites, a protected spot away from winter wind gives this evergreen shrub a better start each spring.
Prune Hardy Daisy Gardenia after flowering, shaping lightly to keep the shrub full and rounded. Clip spent flowers just above a leaf node to encourage a cleaner look and remove dead, damaged, or crowded branches as needed. Container-grown plants need more frequent watering than in-ground shrubs and should be protected during hard freezes near the edge of the plant’s range.
Hardy Daisy Gardenia Spacing
Space Hardy Daisy Gardenia 3 feet apart for a fragrant hedge, or 5 to 6 feet apart for individual shrubs with open space between plants. For containers, choose a pot at least 18 inches wide with drainage holes and an acidic, well-drained potting mix. Place potted plants in bright protected light and check moisture often during summer heat.
Hardy Daisy Gardenia makes a good companion for camellia, pieris shrubs, sweetspire, or leucothoe in acidic beds with filtered light and steady moisture. Agapanthus can add upright summer flowers nearby in brighter sites with good drainage. In containers, use fuchsia, wishbone flowers, or lobelia around the edge for seasonal color that suits regular watering and protected sun.
